Hi, I’m Michelle Atkinson, an Irvine mom of three and local travel advisor. I help families find cruises and vacations that fit the Irvine school calendar, so you can make the most of school breaks without missing school.
The district lists a break Monday through Friday, but your family can usually leave the Saturday before and come home the Sunday after. These are the real travel windows, based on Irvine’s traditional school calendar.
High schoolers (grades 9–12) also have Jan 15 off, creating a 4-day window from Jan 15–18.
School resumes August 18, 2027.
First day of school: August 18, 2026. Veterans Day (Nov 11, 2026) is a single weekday off.
High schoolers (grades 9–12) also have Jan 14 off, creating a 4-day window from Jan 14–17.

Travel windows include surrounding weekends and are based on Irvine’s traditional school calendar. Always confirm dates with your individual school before booking.
Same break, very different vacations. Here are five cruises that fit Irvine’s traditional-school Spring Break travel window.
Travel window includes both surrounding weekends.
“No airport required, and the dates fit right in the middle of Spring Break. This would be my pick for kids who want lots to do on the ship.”
“A really easy way to get the Disney experience without flying to Florida. There are Disney shows, characters, supervised kids clubs and, importantly, complimentary soft-serve ice cream.”
Disney Wonder also has a 3-night Baja sailing March 26–29 from San Diego (Catalina & Ensenada), but it departs Friday, March 26 while Irvine traditional schools are still in session. Families would need to miss school that Friday.
Ask Michelle About This Cruise
“This one uses almost the entire Spring Break window and gives you three very different Mexico stops. It feels much more like a full vacation than a quick getaway.”
“Holland America is quieter than Disney or Royal Caribbean, but the dates are almost perfect for Irvine Spring Break. I especially like this option for multigenerational families or families who care more about the destinations than big onboard attractions.”
Budget-Friendly Pick
“A good option if keeping the cost down matters. Long Beach is convenient from Irvine, and you still get four nights away with stops in Catalina and Ensenada.”
Tell me who’s traveling, your kids’ ages and what matters most to you. I’ll help you compare the options.
Help Me Choose a CruiseSummer gives Irvine families enough time for the trips that don’t fit into a short school break.
Summer is the season for Alaska, with enough time to see glaciers, whales, and wilderness without trying to squeeze it into a long weekend.
A longer break also means room for the flights, the cruise, and maybe a few extra days before or after: think Mediterranean, Greek Isles, or Northern Europe.
Sometimes the best family vacation is the one where the kids stay home.
Virgin Voyages is one of my favorite options for a kid-free getaway. The food is amazing, with more than 20 included eateries and no traditional main dining room or buffet. The shows are fun and unexpected, and Wi-Fi, gratuities and group fitness classes are included.
Even better for Southern California travelers, the brand-new Brilliant Lady sails from Los Angeles, making it an easy getaway from Irvine without getting on a plane.
“Virgin feels completely different from a traditional cruise. I love the food and the shows, and it’s especially fun for couples, birthdays, trips with friends, or parents who just want a few days away without the kids.”
For travelers who care more about what’s outside the ship than what’s happening onboard. Expedition cruises are about getting closer to wildlife, exploring remote places, and getting off the ship to experience where you actually are.
Think Alaska, the Galápagos, Baja California, Antarctica and other wildlife-rich destinations, often aboard smaller ships with naturalists and expert guides. I’m a certified National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions specialist, and expedition and wildlife travel are a major focus of my work.
“If your idea of a great cruise involves whales, wildlife, Zodiac boats and learning about where you are, this is my favorite kind of cruising.”
Book a cruise with me, and I’ll donate $100 to the school of your choice after you sail. It’s a simple way for your family’s next vacation to give a little something back, especially meaningful for Irvine families.
Everything above is just a starting point. From family-friendly mega-ships to small expedition vessels, I can help you compare options across many cruise lines and styles of cruising, including:
